“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10 KJV).
The people of Gadarenes gave the enemy access to their region, not just a man at a tomb. As a bystander within Mark 5, I’ve seen many parts of this scenario played out in real time. I know the broken heart that Jesus had at seeing this man, and I also know the love and compassion that He had for him as well. The people may have feared the man because of his strength, but Jesus understood and displayed that fear could not exist where healing is needed. Working within the mental health field, I’ve seen what was depicted by the man at the tomb. It’s not easy, but Jesus removed the cover of what was happening. The Legion of demons (composed of thousands of demons) thought that they could continue to reign and rule, but the King stepped onto the ground and caused atmospheric shift to happen.
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed and qualified me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and afflicted; He has sent me to bind up and heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the [physical and spiritual] captives and the opening of the prison and of the eyes to those who are bound” (Isaiah 61:1 AMPC).
No one could contain the man who made his dwelling amongst the tombs. No chain could hold him. He screamed and harmed himself, scratching his skin with stones and lived a lonely life. The enemy isolated him, and he had no help. Jesus was the help and the therapist. He came in, and with authority, He told the demons to leave.
Now, Legion recognized Jesus, and asked Him to not send them out of the country. This made me question something. The demons didn’t mind leaving the man, but wanted to stay ‘home’. The region was impacted and suppressed. What was happening with the man at the tombs was a manifestation of an infestation in that land.
Why this matters: I pray for mental health today. In 2026, this man would be in a facility, highly medicated and possibly in a restraint many times a day. The inner core of this man was sweetness, but he was tormented, judged, and had no help. His actions drove anyone that thought about helping him away. I pray that peace will be still in the atmosphere of all alternative schools, mental health hospitals/facilities, group homes, substance abuse rehabs, group therapies, therapeutic sessions, coaching sessions, schools in general, daycares, the mind of the therapist, the mind of the social worker, the mind of the CNA, the mind of the psych nurse, the mind of the teacher, the mind of the family member who has a loved one that struggles with a mental health diagnosis, the mind of the psychiatrist, all locations that assist those struggling with mental health issues, and all people who walk in what the man at the tomb has experienced.
Some days are so heavy, but God reigns, and He cares. BE STILL applies to this situation, but Jesus was not moved. He provided us with information of what was happening and how to handle it. Jesus identified the name of the demons, got intel of them not desiring to leave the region that they had access in, and told us to tell it to COME OUT.
I thank God today for the freedom to work and move within Him, unhindered, undistracted, and given the tools to pray.
In the name of Jesus, I pray for your mind, and I pray peace within you and over you. I pray that you have deliverance from those things sent to torment you that are not of God. I pray that all doors open to the enemy in your life are sealed, in Jesus name. I pray that you will call out those things that torment you in the presence of God, and know that He is faithful to deliver you because He cares about you.
I pray safety over those working within the mental health field, and I pray that you always listen to God. He is your compass. I pray that you don’t hold weight that is not yours. Release your day to Jesus, every day. God sees you. In Jesus name, Amen.

Note: In Mark 4, Jesus went through a storm to get to the man at the tomb. He was undistracted and had already spoken peace to the atmosphere. The place had already shifted. Jesus declared and called forth peace before His feet touched that land.
